Protecting Your Bone Health

If you have a family history of osteoporosis as well as any of the treatments for breast cancer or ovarian shut down as cited in the graphic (above). We recommend you speak with your doctor about getting a DEXA scan. This scan is also known as a bone density test. This will help measure bone loss from a baseline and over time.

If you are found to be on the decline (incurring bone loss) there are medications known as bisphosphonates to help prevent and treat osteoporosis:

Fosamax (chemical name: alendronate sodium)

Actonel (chemical name: risedronate)

Boniva (chemical name: ibandronate)

You may want to adjust your lifestyle accordingly, to ensure you are getting enough calcium and vitamin D. Preferably through calcium-rich foods, and fortified beverages, and by adding such in a supplement form.

Weight-bearing exercises are also a good measure to add to your routine. Doing weight-bearing exercises at least 3-4 times a week (for 30 minutes) for maximum bone health benefits. Often it is those exercises where your bones feel that they are under attack that ultimately yield the most benefit (i.e., jogging, playing tennis, racquetball, squash dancing, etc.).

Remember, longevity and life’s quality are rooted in one’s overall health and this includes our bones.
